A DStv decoder update is the new software that DStv sends to your box over the satellite. Most of the time it installs itself, but you can also start one by hand in a couple of minutes. This guide walks you through both, and shows what to do if the download hangs halfway.
Quick answer: To run a DStv decoder update on an HD decoder, press the blue DStv button, open Settings, then User Preferences, then General, and pick Download latest software. If that line is greyed out, you're already up to date. Explora boxes mostly update on their own while they sit in standby, so leave them powered at the wall.
A software download needs a steady satellite signal from start to finish. If the picture is breaking up, the update can stall, so sort the signal first. Run through these quick checks before you press anything.
If the picture keeps freezing, an update won't cure it. That's a signal fault, and our guide to the E48-32 no signal error is the better place to start.
DStv's own help page lists the manual steps for the HD Single View decoder. We've used the same order on many boxes in Franschhoek homes, and it rarely takes long.
If Download latest software is greyed out, the decoder already has the newest version. You can read the same steps on the DStv help page for HD decoders.
The Explora keeps all its options in one central menu that opens with the DStv button. Settings sits inside it, split into User Preferences and System Settings. Menu wording can shift slightly after each software release, so follow what your screen shows.
In practice, Exploras look after their own software. New versions arrive over the satellite and install while the box is resting. That's why we tell clients to put the decoder in standby at night instead of switching it off at the plug.
Good to know: An Explora that's linked to the internet still gets its software from the satellite. The internet link is for Catch Up, BoxOffice and other online extras. If you want those, see how to connect an Explora to WiFi.
A lot of houses here are lock-up-and-go homes. Owners leave for weeks and switch everything off at the wall. When they return, the decoder may be a few versions behind and has to catch up before it behaves.

Winter adds its own problem. Thick cloud and heavy rain over the valley can weaken the signal for hours, and a download that starts during a downpour may not finish. The tall peaks around La Motte and Groendal also cut into the dish's view of the northern sky, so there's less margin to spare.
Guesthouses and wine estates see it too. A box in a guest room might be off for the whole quiet season, then guests arrive to an old menu and odd glitches. A quick manual update before the season saves those calls.
A stuck download usually shows as a frozen progress bar or a message that doesn't move. Give it a fair chance first, because some updates are big. Then work through these safe steps.
Safety first: Never open the decoder or climb onto a wet roof to check the dish. Unplug at the wall with dry hands, and don't yank cables out of the back while the box is busy. If a surge hit during load-shedding, see our decoder restart and surge checks before you try again.
DStv's quick guide for the HD decoder explains its front lights. They tell you whether the box is busy or has a fault, so check them before you assume it has frozen.
| Front light | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Solid amber | Software is downloading | Leave it alone and wait |
| Flashing amber | An unread mail message | Open the message in the menu |
| Solid red | The box is in standby | Press the power button |
| Flashing red | An error | Restart, then check the signal |
| Green blink | The remote's command was received | Nothing, the remote is working |
Explora models have their own front panel, so these colours may not match exactly. If the lights do nothing at all, our page on a decoder that won't turn on covers the power checks.
Sometimes the software is fine and something else is wrong. A message about channels not being authorised points to the account, not the box, and our E16 error guide shows how to clear it. A blank screen in every storm points to the dish.
On farms near Wemmershoek and Simondium, long cable runs and old connectors often cause dropouts that look like a software fault. Our DStv signal repairs start with a meter test, so we find the real cause before we change anything.
If the box still won't take an update after these steps, it's time to call a technician. Our team does DStv installation in Franschhoek and repairs across the valley, and we always quote first. Call or WhatsApp 079 754 5527, or send us a message and we'll book a time.

On an HD decoder, press the blue DStv button, then go to Settings, User Preferences, General and Download latest software. If that line is greyed out, the box already has the newest version. Explora decoders normally update by themselves while they're in standby.
Most updates finish within a few minutes, but a big one can take longer. Leave the decoder alone until it restarts by itself. If nothing has moved after about 20 minutes, restart the box and try the manual steps again.
The most common reason is a weak or broken signal, often during heavy rain. The download needs a clean signal from start to finish. Wait for clear weather, check the picture is steady, then try again. If it keeps failing, have the dish and cables tested.
No. DStv decoders get their software over the satellite, so the dish must be delivering a good signal. An internet connection on an Explora is for online extras like Catch Up, not for the main software.

DStv XtraView allows compatible decoders on one account to provide viewing in more than one environment, but the system is not created by simply splitting one cable. Short answer The DStv WiFi Connector is a small USB dongle that gets an Explora onto your home WiFi when the decoder has no wireless built in. Once it is connected, the decoder can reach Catch Up, Showmax, BoxOffice and the connected parts of the DStv menu. It does nothing for your satellite reception. If […]
