How a DSTV relocation works
A typical relocation is a two-visit job, but we can often do both in one day if the two properties are close together. At the old property we carefully unmount the dish, coil the cable, disconnect the decoder, and make sure we leave the wall in a reasonable state (we'll fill the bracket holes if you ask). At the new property we walk the site, pick the best dish position (see our dish positioning guidance), mount the bracket, re-align the dish, run new cable to your nominated room, and reconnect the decoder.
Whatever can be reused (dish, LNB, bracket, decoder) gets reused. Whatever's damaged or unsuitable for the new property gets replaced and quoted up front: for a complete fresh install at the new address, see new DSTV installation.
What we usually need to replace
Cable runs are almost always different at the new property, so a fresh run of RG6 from the new dish position to the new TV point is standard. F-connectors get replaced as a matter of routine: they're cheap and water-damaged ones cause most callbacks. Brackets often get swapped if the new wall is brick rather than fibrecement (or vice versa). The dish itself, LNB and decoder usually transfer fine: though if you're moving from an HD setup to a property where you want recording, this is a good moment to upgrade to DSTV Explora.
Updating your DSTV account
You'll need to update your address with MultiChoice, we can guide you through the process if you're not sure. The decoder doesn't need a new smartcard, and your subscription, recordings (on Explora) and Extra View configuration all carry over to the new home. What affects the cost of a DStv relocation
A relocation is really two jobs, a removal and an installation, and the second one is where the cost sits. What we find at the new property decides the quote.
What is already at the new place
If there is a usable dish and TV point, this is a quick reconnection. If the new property has nothing, it is effectively a new installation.
Whether you are taking the dish
Removing and re-mounting your existing dish is often possible, but older dishes and brackets do not always survive the move in a condition worth reusing.
Distance between properties
A move within Franschhoek is straightforward. Moving between towns in the valley means travel and usually two separate visits.
Number of TV points
Recreating a single lounge point is simple. Reproducing a multi-room or XtraView setup at the new house takes considerably longer.
New property access and structure
Roof type, wall material, height and line of sight at the new address all matter, and they are rarely the same as the old one.
Timing
Same-day removal and reinstallation is possible when the properties are close and the new one is ready. Otherwise we usually split it across two visits.

What goes wrong with relocations
Most relocation problems are avoidable, and they nearly all come from the equipment being handled as an afterthought on moving day.
- Dish removed by the movers and arriving bent, so alignment is no longer reliable
- Smartcard or decoder left behind, or swapped with the incoming occupant’s
- Coax cut flush at the wall rather than de-terminated, leaving nothing to work with
- New property has no line of sight from the obvious mounting position
- XtraView links broken by the move and never re-paired on the account
- Address not updated with DStv, so the account and installation records no longer match
How a relocation works
- We look at both ends. Ideally we assess the new property before moving day, so there are no surprises when the truck arrives.
- Careful removal. Dish, LNB, brackets and decoder removed properly, cable de-terminated rather than cut, and everything packed to travel.
- Make good at the old property. Holes sealed and the wall left tidy, which matters if you are getting a deposit back.
- Reinstall at the new address. New mounting position chosen, dish re-mounted and realigned to peak, cable run and TV point terminated.
- Decoder and account. Decoder reconnected, smartcard re-authorised and any multi-room links re-paired on the account.
- Full test. Signal metered and every channel checked before we leave, exactly as we would on a new installation.
Typical time on site: allow one to two hours for the removal and two to four hours for the reinstallation. Where both properties are close and ready, we can often do the whole move in one day.
