DSTV Signal Repairs

No signal. E48-32. Picture freezing in light rain. Decoder won't boot. Missing channels. A dish that's blown off the wall. We diagnose and fix every common DSTV signal and decoder fault across Franschhoek, Paarl, Stellenbosch and the rest of the Cape Winelands: usually the same day.

The most common DSTV faults we repair

E48-32 / no signal: usually a dish alignment issue, faulty LNB, water-damaged F-connector or broken cable. We test the dish first, then the cable, then the LNB, then the decoder: in that order, to find the root cause. (Realignment is its own dish alignment job; we'll quote separately if that's what's needed.)

Picture freezing in bad weather: the dish signal is borderline. Could be alignment, an aging LNB, or signal degradation through old cable. We test signal strength on a meter and decide whether to realign, swap the LNB or replace the cable run.

Missing channels: usually a smartcard subscription issue, a decoder that needs a software update, or a partial dish misalignment that's lost one transponder while keeping others. We confirm with MultiChoice and fix the dish side if needed.

Decoder won't boot or freezes constantly: sometimes a software issue (we factory-reset and reload), sometimes hardware (we recommend a replacement and quote on it, see DSTV decoder setup).

How we diagnose a fault

We work systematically from the dish backwards. First, we visually inspect the dish for misalignment, corrosion or storm damage. Then we connect our signal meter directly to the LNB output to confirm raw signal strength and quality: this isolates whether the fault is dish-side or cable-and-decoder-side. If the dish is clean, we move to the cable: check the F-connectors at both ends for water ingress, test continuity, and replace any damaged sections. Only then do we look at the decoder itself.

This order matters. Most 'decoder problems' turn out to be dish or cable problems, and replacing a perfectly good decoder wastes your money. Most 'dish problems' are actually cable problems where water has come down through a bad seal.

What affects the cost of a signal repair

Repairs are quoted on what the fault actually turns out to be, which is why we diagnose before we price the fix rather than guessing over the phone.

What has actually failed

A dish nudged out of alignment is a very different job to a failed LNB, a water-damaged cable run or a decoder that has been surged.

Whether parts are needed

An alignment needs no parts. An LNB, a length of coax, new connectors or a bracket all add materials to the callout.

Access to the dish

A dish at single-storey height on an accessible wall is quick. Roof-level, double-storey or awkward mounting positions take longer and need more equipment.

How the original install was done

Neat, labelled, accessible wiring can be diagnosed in minutes. A poorly done install often has to be partly redone before it can even be tested properly.

How many points are affected

A fault on one TV is contained. A fault affecting a multi-room, XtraView or communal setup means tracing the problem across the whole distribution.

Urgency

We fit emergency and same-day work in where we can, but it depends on where you are in the valley and what is already booked that day.

We diagnose first and tell you what the fix costs before doing it. If the honest answer is that the installation needs redoing rather than patching, we will say so.

The faults we are called out for most

If your symptom is on this list, we have almost certainly seen it this month. Each links to a full explanation of what causes it and what you can try yourself first.

How we work a repair

  1. Symptom first. We ask what changed and when, because “it stopped after the storm” and “it has been getting worse for months” point at completely different faults.
  2. Meter at the decoder. We read signal strength and quality at the decoder to establish whether the problem is upstream on the dish or downstream in the equipment.
  3. Trace to the fault. Working outwards: connectors, cable, LNB, then dish alignment and mounting. We find the cause rather than swapping parts hopefully.
  4. Quote the fix. You get told what is wrong and what it costs before we do the work.
  5. Repair and re-test. Once fixed we re-meter and confirm there is signal margin in hand, so the fault does not simply return in the next bad weather.
  6. Tell you what to watch. If something else on the installation is close to failing, you will hear about it now rather than on the next callout.

Typical time on site: most single-fault repairs are resolved within one to two hours. Same-day service is available across much of the valley, though it depends on the day and where you are.

DSTV Signal Repair FAQs

What causes DSTV signal loss?+

The usual causes are a misaligned dish, a faulty LNB, water-damaged or perished cabling, weather, or a new obstruction blocking the dish. See our dish alignment service.

Can you fix E48-32 and other no-signal errors?+

Yes. We diagnose whether the fault is the dish, LNB, cabling or decoder and repair it on the spot.

My picture keeps pixelating or freezing, can you fix it?+

Yes. Pixelation and freezing are almost always a signal-quality problem: usually alignment or the LNB, which we correct and test.

Do you repair signal loss after storms?+

Yes. Wind and storms often shift dishes in the Winelands. We realign and weatherproof so it stays stable.

How quickly can you come out?+

We offer same-day callouts across Franschhoek where possible.

Do you repair all decoder types?+

Yes, HD, Explora and Explora Ultra decoders.
