There’s a particular kind of frustration when your DSTV picture freezes just as the match kicks off. In the Cape Winelands it happens more than it should: not because the area has bad reception, but because of a handful of very fixable issues. Here’s what actually causes signal loss around Franschhoek, and how a proper repair gets it back for good rather than until the next storm.
Weather is the trigger, not usually the cause
People blame the rain, but a correctly installed dish handles Winelands weather fine. What the weather exposes is a dish that was only aligned to “just working”. If your signal quality sits at the bare minimum on a clear day, the extra atmospheric interference from a cloudburst is enough to push it below the threshold and freeze the picture. A dish aligned to peak signal with a calibrated meter has the buffer to ride through the same storm. That’s why our first move on any signal repair is to check true signal strength and quality, not just whether a picture appears.
The usual suspects
Across the Valley, the same causes come up again and again:
- Dish knocked out of alignment by wind, a ladder, or a branch, even a few millimetres of movement drops the signal.
- Water in the connectors. If the F-connector at the dish wasn’t sealed with self-amalgamating tape, Winelands rain gets in and corrodes the cable from the inside. This is the single most common repair we do.
- Old or wrong cable. Cheap RG59 instead of RG6 degrades and loses signal within a couple of years.
- A failing LNB: the receiver on the dish arm, which weakens with age and sun exposure.
- Trees. A dish that had clear line-of-sight three years ago can now be looking straight into a grown-out oak.
When it’s an error code, not the dish
Not every “no signal” is a dish problem. An E48-32 error often points to the smartcard or decoder rather than the feed, and a channel that’s gone missing can be a package or activation issue rather than a fault at all. Knowing the difference saves you a callout, which is why we diagnose before we quote.
Why the fix has to be done properly
A lot of “repairs” are really just a re-tweak that lasts until the next bad weather. A proper fix replaces failed parts with the right spec: RG6 cable, a galvanised bracket, a sealed connector, and realigns to peak signal so the problem doesn’t come straight back. If your dish and cabling are old enough that every storm brings a new fault, sometimes the honest answer is a small re-install rather than another patch.
