How DSTV packages are structured
DSTV is sold as a ladder of bouquets. The higher up you go, the more sport, movies and series you unlock, and the higher the monthly subscription. Every tier includes the ones below it, so the real question isn’t “which channels do I want?” but “where on the ladder does my household stop being willing to pay?” Prices are set by MultiChoice and adjust most years, so treat the figures below as a 2026 guide rather than a fixed rate card.
The 2026 packages at a glance
- Premium: around R949/month. Everything: all sport, all movie and series channels. The choice for serious sport and film households.
- Compact Plus: around R579/month. Strong sport (including a lot of the football and rugby) plus good series channels, without the full Premium movie line-up.
- Compact: around R459/month. A solid all-round family package with general entertainment and some sport.
- Family: around R329/month. Popular for households that mainly want general entertainment, kids’ channels and news.
- Access: around R159/month. The entry package for the basics.
- EasyView: around R35/month. The cheapest way to keep an active DSTV account.
If you only care about a specific sport season, remember you can move up and down the ladder month to month: many Winelands households sit on Compact and jump to Compact Plus or Premium for the rugby or football season.
Which decoder goes with which package?
Your package and your hardware are linked. To get the full benefit of the higher bouquets: catch-up, recording, and the DStv app integration, you’ll want an Explora rather than a basic HD decoder. Watching different channels in different rooms
One common surprise: a single decoder means every TV in the house watches the same channel. If your household wants sport in the lounge and cartoons in the bedroom at the same time, you need either a second decoder linked with Extra View or a streaming setup alongside.
