DSTV Extra View vs Streaming: The Best Way to Watch in Every Room

DSTV Extra View vs Streaming: The Best Way to Watch in Every Room

The moment there’s more than one person in the house, the single-TV problem appears: one decoder means every screen watches the same channel. Someone wants the rugby, someone wants a movie, and a war breaks out over the remote. There are two ways to solve it — DSTV Extra View or streaming — and the right answer depends on your home. Here’s how to choose.

The problem, clearly

A standard DSTV decoder outputs one live channel at a time. Split that signal to a second TV and both rooms are stuck watching the same thing. To genuinely watch different live channels in different rooms, you need either a second decoder or a second source entirely. We explain the mechanics in how DSTV Extra View works — this post is about which route suits you.

Option 1: DSTV Extra View

Extra View links a second (and optionally third) decoder to your main account, so each room has its own decoder watching its own channel, all on one subscription with a modest Extra View fee. Its big advantages: it’s all proper DSTV — same channels, same sport, same reliability — and it doesn’t depend on your internet. In a Winelands home where the fibre isn’t always rock-solid, that matters. The trade-off is the extra decoder and the cabling to link the rooms, which is why it’s best planned at install. See our Extra View setup service for the details.

Option 2: Streaming (Showmax, DStv Stream, apps)

The streaming route puts a different source on the second TV — Showmax, DStv Stream or another app on a smart TV or streaming stick. It needs no dish cabling to that room, just good internet, and it’s great for on-demand movies and series. The catch is that live sport over streaming leans entirely on your connection: if the internet stutters during a match, so does the game. For a household with fast, reliable fibre and a streaming-first habit, it’s a clean solution — and the new Explora Ultra even brings satellite and streaming together in one box.

Which should you choose?

  • You want rock-solid live sport in every room, regardless of internet → Extra View.
  • Your second room is mostly movies and series on demand → streaming.
  • Your internet is fast and reliable and you like apps → streaming, or an Explora Ultra to get both.
  • Your fibre is patchy → Extra View, every time.

Plenty of Franschhoek homes end up with a mix — Extra View for the lounge-and-bedroom sport split, streaming for the kids’ on-demand watching. There’s no wrong answer, only the one that fits how you watch and how good your connection is. Either way it should sit on a properly aligned dish and a correct decoder setup.
