All three need your STB number. Switch the decoder to channel 100, or press HELP on the remote, to display it. Make sure the decoder is connected to an aligned dish first: activation depends on a clean signal.
Unlike DStv, there’s no monthly subscription sitting behind an OpenView decoder, but the box still has to be activated before it will show you a single channel. New decoders arrive from the shop unactivated by design, and every so often an existing decoder needs to be reactivated too: after a long power outage, a factory reset, or if it’s been sitting unused for months. The process itself is simple once you know the sequence, but it trips people up because it happens partly on the TV and partly on a cellphone, and the two have to talk to each other correctly. DStv works differently: see our guide on activating a DStv decoder if that is the platform you are on.
We activate decoders as part of most OpenView installs we do around Franschhoek, so this is the exact sequence we use, plus the fixes for the handful of things that commonly go wrong.
Have these ready and you’ll get through activation in one attempt rather than three:
*120*6843*1# and follow the USSD menu prompts. If USSD isn’t working for you, or you’d simply rather not deal with a menu system, OpenView also offers activation support through WhatsApp on 082 966 6429 and telephonically through the call centre on 0861 696 843. For both, have your STB number ready to send or read out: it’s the one piece of information the agent needs to push activation to your specific decoder.
WhatsApp tends to suit people whose USSD attempts keep timing out, since it removes the network-gateway step entirely. Phone support is the better option if your decoder is showing a specific on-screen error and you want someone to talk you through clearing it rather than guessing at menu options.
Via USSD, the actual activation is usually done within a few minutes of completing the prompts: the decoder reboot is normally the longest part of it. WhatsApp and phone-assisted activation can take a little longer depending on how busy the support lines are, but same-day activation is the norm rather than the exception. If more than half an hour has passed with no change and the decoder still shows an activation prompt, that’s the point to call rather than keep retrying the USSD code.
The USSD code times out or says “service not available.” This is usually a network-side hiccup rather than anything wrong with your decoder. Try again after a minute, and if it keeps failing, switch to the WhatsApp number instead: it bypasses the USSD gateway completely.
Activation goes through but the decoder still shows “no secure device” or an error code. This almost always comes down to signal, not the activation attempt itself. The decoder needs a clean, stable satellite signal to receive the activation broadcast from OpenView: if the dish is even slightly misaligned, the activation instruction can fail to land even though the USSD side reported success. Check signal strength and quality on the HELP screen before trying again. Our guide to OpenView signal problems works through the usual causes.
The STB number isn’t being accepted. Double-check you’re reading the STB number and not confusing it with a model number printed elsewhere on the box. Typos are the most common cause here: the number is long, and it’s easy to miscount a digit when reading it off a small screen.
Everything activates, but only a few channels show up. That’s a separate issue from activation itself, usually a channel scan that hasn’t completed or a signal problem affecting specific transponders. Our guide on fixing OpenView signal problems covers that side in detail, our piece on how to rescan and restore missing channels walks through the channel-search menu itself, and our full OpenView channels list shows you exactly what you should be seeing once everything’s working.
Buying a used OpenView decoder can save you a bit of money, but it comes with one real risk: if the previous owner’s device was ever reported lost or stolen, it may be blacklisted and unable to activate no matter how many times you dial the USSD code. Ask the seller for proof of the original purchase where possible, and if activation genuinely won’t go through after a few clean attempts with good signal, that’s worth raising with the OpenView call centre before assuming your decoder itself is faulty. If you are still weighing up used against new, our OpenView decoder price guide sets out what a new box and a full installation actually cost.
