DStv Access Channels List (2026): Every Channel + Price

Is DStv Access worth it in 2026?

Access gets underrated. People hear “entry-level” and picture a handful of grainy local channels, but that’s not really what you’re getting for R99 a month on the streaming version, or around R150 a month if you want it on an actual satellite decoder rather than an app. It’s the package we install most often for cottage rentals, staff accommodation, student flats above the shops in town, and second decoders in a main bedroom where nobody needs the full sports package: just news, local drama, kids’ TV and something to watch while the kettle boils.

DStv Access price: streaming vs decoder

This trips people up more than it should. DStv Stream Access: the app-only version with no dish required, sits at R99 a month, which is roughly the same price point it launched at years ago. Put it on a proper satellite decoder instead and the subscription runs higher, closer to R150 a month, because you’re paying for the broadcast infrastructure rather than just data-delivered streaming. Neither figure includes the decoder hardware or, if you’re starting from scratch, the dish and installation. Confirm the exact current figure in MyDStv or with your installer before you commit, since DStv adjusts these periodically. Our DStv packages and price list page keeps the full six-bouquet comparison updated if Access turns out to be too light for what you need.

That’s a genuinely wide spread for R99 to R150 a month: the gap versus Compact is really about how much live top-flight sport you get and how many movie and international drama channels are stacked on top, not a lack of variety altogether.

Two Access channels are closing next month

Worth flagging directly, because Access carries both of them: MultiChoice is shutting down Mzansi Music and kykNET Lekker at 23:59 on 16 September 2026, alongside M-Net Movies 1 and Mzansi Bioskop on the higher packages. kykNET Lekker in particular was built for the Access tier’s Afrikaans-language audience, so if that’s a channel your household actually watches, expect it to disappear from the guide that week. MultiChoice says the content is being folded into other channels rather than dropped outright, but the channel number itself goes dark. Separately, and unrelated to the closures, SuperSport Variety 4 becomes SuperSport Action from 19 August 2026: same channel, same content, new name and number on your EPG.

Where Access makes more sense than Compact

If your household’s viewing is genuinely news, SABC and e.tv soapies, kids’ programming and the odd Trace music video, paying triple for Compact just to get SuperSport channels nobody watches is money down the drain. We see this most with granny flats, domestic staff quarters, and holiday cottages on wine estates around Franschhoek: a second decoder on Access, run through XtraView from the main household decoder, often covers the need without a second full subscription at all. Worth asking your installer whether XtraView or a standalone Access decoder makes more financial sense for your specific setup, because the answer changes depending on how many rooms need a screen.

Where Access falls short is obvious the moment rugby or PSL derby weekend comes around: you’re limited to SuperSport Action’s highlights-style coverage rather than the dedicated league channels Compact carries, and there’s no Champions League football at all. If that’s a dealbreaker even occasionally, our DStv Compact channels list covers what you’d be stepping up to.

Streaming Access vs a decoder: which one out here?

DStv Stream Access is tempting because there’s no dish to mount and no installer visit needed: you download the app, pay R99, and you’re watching. In town with solid fibre that works fine. Out on a farm or wine estate where connectivity is patchier, or during load-shedding when your router’s UPS only buys you an hour or two, a satellite decoder keeps working regardless of what the internet is doing. We’d rather you make that call with the trade-offs in front of you than find out the hard way during a stage 4 evening that streaming Access needs a working internet connection to function at all.

Getting Access installed properly

Access is often the package people add as an afterthought: a second point in the house, a room for visiting family, a cottage on the property. That doesn’t mean it deserves a rushed install. A poorly routed cable or a decoder fighting for signal through three walls will annoy you just as much on Access as it would on Premium. We handle Access activations the same way we handle every package: proper dish alignment (or a clean XtraView link from an existing dish), correctly earthed cabling, and a decoder that’s actually tuned before we leave.
