Recordings won't play, the Playlist takes forever to load, or the box restarts itself in the middle of the rugby. These are the classic signs of a DStv Explora hard drive corrupt problem. Before you write the decoder off, try the fixes below in order. A good number of the Explora faults we see in Franschhoek clear up with the first two.
Quick answer: If your DStv Explora hard drive seems corrupt, first do a clean restart: standby, wait 30 seconds, then switch off at the wall for a few minutes. Next, give it airflow, free up space with Auto Delete and let any software update finish. If recordings still fail or it keeps rebooting, the drive needs a technician. Never open the box.
Pulling the plug while the Explora is busy is one of the easiest ways to upset its hard drive. DStv's quick guide says to stop recordings, put the box in standby and wait 30 seconds before you disconnect it. Use the same routine to restart it.
If it plays, the drive was probably just stuck after a power dip. Make a habit of using standby before you switch anything off. If the box won't power up at all, see our fixes for a decoder that won't turn on.
Not every glitch means the drive is dying. Use this table to match what you see with the most likely cause.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Recordings stop halfway or won't open | Drive errors after a power cut | Clean restart, then test a new recording |
| New recordings fail, old ones play | Disk is full | Turn on Auto Delete, clear old shows |
| Box restarts on its own | Heat, a power supply fault or a stuck update | Check airflow, let updates finish |
| Grinding or clicking from inside | Drive wearing out | Stop using it and book a repair |
| Playlist empty after a restart | Drive data lost | Call DStv or a technician |
A decoder that restarts itself again and again is often running too hot. DStv says the Explora needs at least 10cm of free space above and on both sides. It shouldn't stand on carpet, in sunlight, near a heater or with other gear stacked on top.
Check the cabinet. In many Franschhoek guesthouses and boutique hotels the decoder lives in a closed TV unit with no airflow at all. Open the doors for a day and see if the rebooting stops.
A box that has been off for weeks can also restart a few times while it downloads new software. Leave it alone for an hour. If you have a connected Explora, our guide on how to connect your Explora to WiFi helps it stay up to date.
A full drive can look like a corrupt one, because new recordings simply fail. DStv recommends switching on Auto Delete, which clears old recordings when space is needed. Its quick guide gives this path:
Then open the Playlist and delete shows you've already watched. Locked recordings are never auto-deleted, so remove the lock from any you no longer need. The full steps are in DStv's Explora quick guide.

Our valley is tough on hard drives in a few ways. Heavy winter storms bring power dips, and every sudden cut while the box is recording puts the drive at risk. Lightning near the mountains is another threat. DStv itself recommends surge protection in areas with lots of lightning.
Holiday and lock-up-and-go homes add their own problem. A decoder left on standby for months in a closed-up house in La Motte or Mooiwater gets no airflow and many power dips. When the owners arrive for the season, the drive is often the first thing to complain.
Technician tip: Put the Explora on a surge-protected plug and, if you have backup power, include the TV point. A clean power supply does more for drive health than anything else. Our post on surge checks after load-shedding covers this in more detail.
Many people search how to format DStv Explora hard drive and hope it's a quick cure. It can clear errors, but it erases every recording on the box. Treat it as a last resort, not a first step.
The safest way is to have DStv support or a technician guide you, so you know which reset you're running and what you'll lose. If the drive is failing physically, formatting won't save it.
Safety first: Never open the Explora or try to swap the hard drive yourself. DStv warns that tampering voids the warranty, and the power supply carries mains voltage. Leave the inside of the box to a qualified technician.
If the clean restart, airflow, Auto Delete and a finished update don't help, the drive or decoder is faulty. Decoder insurance claims are normally swapped for a similar model. Without cover, a new box is often the better option.

Start with a clean restart: standby, wait 30 seconds, then switch off at the wall for a few minutes. Check the box has airflow, free up space with Auto Delete and let updates finish. If recordings still fail, a technician needs to check the drive or replace the decoder.
Yes. Formatting wipes the drive, so every recording on the box is lost. Use it only as a last resort, ideally with DStv support or a technician guiding you. If the drive is physically failing, formatting won't fix it.
The most common causes are overheating, a faulty power supply and a software update that keeps restarting. Give the decoder at least 10cm of space around it, keep it out of closed cabinets and leave it alone for an hour. If it keeps rebooting after that, book a repair.
They can. A sudden cut while the Explora is writing to the drive can damage recordings and the drive itself. Storms in the valley make this more likely. Use standby before switching off, and put the decoder on a surge-protected plug.
No. DStv says you should never open the Explora, and doing so voids the warranty. The box also has mains power inside. A qualified technician or DStv repair centre should handle any hardware fault.

Searching for an accredited DStv installer in Franschhoek is sensible, especially when a job involves an Explora, Smart LNB, XtraView, a difficult cable route or equipment supplied with an installation voucher. You can physically move many DStv decoders, but whether the decoder will work correctly at another house depends on the satellite installation waiting there. The subscription travels with the decoder and account; the dish, LNB, cabling and decoder configuration at the destination still need to be compatible. What the other house must already have The […]
