How to Activate a DStv Decoder: Every Method That Works

How to Activate a DStv Decoder: Every Method That Works

Short answer

You can activate a DStv decoder through the MyDStv app, on WhatsApp, via USSD, or by phoning DStv. Whichever route you use, have the smartcard number and decoder number in front of you, and make sure the decoder is switched on and receiving signal.

Activation will not work on a decoder that has no satellite signal. The box has to be able to hear the broadcast to receive the authorisation. Sort the dish first, then activate.

Both numbers are on a sticker on the decoder and on-screen under the system or information menu.

Get these two numbers first

Nearly every failed activation we get called out to comes down to the wrong number being read out. There are two, they look similar, and they do different jobs.

  • The smartcard number: printed on the card itself, and usually the longer of the two.
  • The decoder number: on a sticker on the decoder body, often on the underside or the back.

If the stickers have faded, which happens on older boxes that have sat in a sunny lounge for years, both numbers are available on screen. Press Menu and look under the system information or decoder information section.

Write them down before you start rather than reading them off the back of a decoder while balancing a phone. It sounds trivial, but transposed digits are genuinely the number one cause of an activation that will not take.

Check the signal before you do anything

This is the step people skip, and it wastes the most time. A DStv decoder receives its activation instruction over the satellite feed. If the dish is misaligned, the cable is damaged or the LNB has failed, the authorisation has no way of reaching the box.

So before you phone anyone: does the decoder show any channels at all, even the free-to-air ones? Can you get into the signal screen and see strength and quality readings that are not sitting at zero?

If you are seeing E48-32 or no signal across every channel, stop. That is a physical fault and activation will fail no matter how many times you try it. Our guides to the E48-32 error and signal strength versus signal quality will get you to the actual problem.

The four ways to activate

The MyDStv app

For most people this is the easiest route, and it is the one we suggest first. Log in with the account details, find the decoder on the account and follow the prompts to activate or reactivate. The app also lets you clear errors and resend an authorisation without speaking to anyone, which is useful outside business hours. Our MyDStv app guide walks through the whole thing.

WhatsApp

DStv runs a WhatsApp service on 060 060 3788. Message it, follow the menu and give the smartcard number when asked. This suits people who would rather not sit in a call queue, and it leaves you with a written record of what was done.

USSD

Dial *120*68584# from the phone number registered on the account. It is the quickest option when you have no data, which makes it the practical choice during load-shedding when the router is down.

Phone the call centre

DStv’s number is 011 289 2222. Worth using when there is something unusual on the account: an ownership change, a payment dispute, a blacklisted decoder, rather than a routine reactivation the app can handle.

Activating after a payment

If the service was suspended for non-payment, the reconnection is usually automatic once the payment reflects. Usually, not instantly. Bank transfers can take a while to show up on the account, so a decoder that is still dark twenty minutes after an EFT is normal rather than broken.

If it has been several hours and the payment has definitely cleared, send a refresh from the MyDStv app before assuming something is wrong. That pushes a fresh authorisation to the decoder.

Leave the decoder switched on while you wait. A box that is off or fully unplugged cannot receive the signal telling it to come back to life, and we have driven out to more than one “reactivation that did not work” that turned out to be a decoder switched off at the wall.

When activation still will not take

  • The numbers do not match the account. A decoder swap that was never registered leaves the account pointing at hardware you no longer own.
  • The decoder is linked to someone else. Common with second-hand boxes. It has to be released from the previous account first.
  • It is blacklisted. A decoder reported lost or stolen will not activate at all, and only DStv can confirm this.
  • There is a balance outstanding. Including amounts attached to a linked decoder you had forgotten about.
  • The smartcard is not seated properly. Remove it, check the chip for dirt, and slide it back in the right way round.

If the decoder throws a smartcard-specific error rather than an account one, our guide to the E141-4 smartcard error covers what that means. For anything that genuinely needs a person and a counter, our guide to the nearest DStv walk-in centre near Franschhoek explains where to go and what those branches can do.

Buying second-hand

A used decoder is fine if its history is clean, but check before money changes hands, not after. Get the decoder and smartcard numbers from the seller and confirm with DStv that the unit is not blacklisted, tied to an unpaid account or still linked as a secondary decoder on someone else’s XtraView setup.

That last one catches people out regularly. A decoder that worked perfectly as part of a linked pair can refuse to activate as a standalone box until it has been released. Our guide to what a DStv decoder costs covers whether the saving is worth the risk.

Frequently asked questions

How long does activation take?

Usually a few minutes once the instruction is sent, provided the decoder is on and has signal. Reconnections after payment can take longer while the payment clears.

Can I activate without signal?

No. The authorisation reaches the decoder over the satellite feed, so the dish has to be working first.

Which number do they ask for?

Usually the smartcard number, but have the decoder number ready too. Some processes need both.

Do I need to be the account holder?

For most changes, yes, or you need to be listed on the account. Have the account holder available for anything involving billing.

The decoder says the smartcard is not authorised. Now what?

Send a refresh from the MyDStv app first. If that does not clear it, check the card is seated correctly, then confirm the account has no outstanding balance.

Based in Franschhoek or the surrounding Winelands? If activation keeps failing, it is very often the signal rather than the account. We meter the feed, sort the dish and get the decoder authorised in one visit. See our decoder setup service. Call 079 754 5527 or request a free quote.
