If you’re still queuing on the DStv call centre line or driving to a walk-in centre to sort out your account, you’re doing it the hard way. The MyDStv app is Multichoice’s own self-service tool, and once it’s set up properly it handles most of the things that used to eat an afternoon: paying your subscription, checking what’s still owing, changing your package, adding an extra decoder for XtraView, and clearing the two error codes that cause 90% of the “my DStv isn’t working” calls we get in Franschhoek: E16 and E30. It won’t fix a cracked LNB or a dish that’s slipped out of alignment after a Helshoogte wind, but for account and subscription issues it’s genuinely useful, and it’s free.
The app is available for Android on the Google Play Store and for iPhone on the Apple App Store: search “MyDStv” and make sure you’re grabbing the current Multichoice-published version, not one of the older clones still floating around some app stores. Once it’s installed, you’ll need to create or log into a MultiChoice ID (this is the same login used across DStv Stream and the DStv website), and then link your account by entering either your smartcard number or your DStv customer number. You’ll get a one-time PIN sent to the cellphone number on file to confirm it’s really you, and from there your account, package and decoders are pulled through automatically. If you’ve recently swapped SIM cards or changed numbers and the OTP isn’t landing, that’s almost always the reason: update your contact number with DStv first (you can do this via the call centre or WhatsApp) before trying to link the app again.
Once you’re linked in, the home screen shows your balance, your renewal date and your current package at a glance: no more guessing whether you’re on Compact or Compact Plus. Payments go through instantly using a debit or credit card, and the app remembers your card for next time if you want it to. Changing your package is just as direct: tap into “My Package,” pick the tier you want, and the change reflects on your decoder within a few minutes once payment clears. This is also where you add extras like an XtraView decoder registration or a once-off catch-up payment if you’ve fallen behind. One thing worth knowing: downgrading mid-month doesn’t refund the difference, it just changes what you’re billed from your next renewal date, so time it around your billing cycle if you can.
These two are the errors we see the most on service calls, and both are usually a subscription-side issue rather than a hardware fault, which means the app can often clear them without a technician visit at all. E16 means “service is currently scrambled” (usually a payment or authorisation hiccup), and E30 means the decoder is still checking your subscription status, which can hang if the signal to the decoder is weak or was recently interrupted.
For a deeper breakdown of what causes each error and the harder fixes, we’ve covered DStv error E16 and E30 and rain-related signal loss in more depth on their own pages.
The app isn’t perfect, and the more recent redesign frustrated a lot of long-time users. Here’s what actually helps when it’s playing up:
If you’d rather see current package pricing before you change anything in the app, our DStv packages and price list page is kept up to date with the latest tiers.
The MyDStv app is brilliant for anything that lives on Multichoice’s side of the connection: your subscription, your package tier, your billing. What it can’t do is walk into your lounge and re-point a dish that’s drifted, replace a corroded LNB, or fix a decoder that’s been fried by a power surge after load-shedding kicks back in. If you’ve run through the app’s fix-error steps, waited the 15 minutes, and you’re still stuck on E16, E30, or no signal at all, that’s your sign it’s a physical fault rather than an account one. Our decoder setup and troubleshooting service covers exactly that gap: we come out, check the dish, LNB, cabling and decoder itself, and sort what the app physically can’t reach.
