The short answer: budget by decoder type, not one headline price
A basic DStv HD decoder in South Africa usually lands in the R699 to R999 range when sold on its own. A deal that includes a standard installation is more often around R999 to R1,499, depending on the retailer, the campaign and what the installer finds at the property.
The premium option is the DStv Explora Ultra. New retail stock commonly sits around R2,499 to R3,499 for the decoder, with some packages costing more once a dish, cabling, smart LNB and labour are included. Promotions move these figures around, so compare the contents of the box rather than only the number printed on the shelf ticket.
Those figures are useful planning ranges for 2026, not a promise that every branch will have the same price. Stock and bundle offers differ between PEP, Game, Makro, specialist satellite shops and DStv-accredited installers.
What does a DStv HD decoder cost?
The current compact HD decoder is the entry point for most single-TV homes. Expect roughly R699-R999 decoder-only. It gives you high-definition viewing on supported channels, the DStv TV Guide, parental controls and the normal Catch Up or streaming features attached to your subscription and account.
It is a sensible choice for a bedroom, a cottage or a household that simply wants live television without Explora recording. Just remember that “decoder-only” means exactly that. You may still need a dish, mounting bracket, LNB, coaxial cable, connectors and labour.
A cheap box is not automatically a cheap working setup. On an older Franschhoek property, for example, brittle cable under the eaves or a dish that moved in winter wind can turn a quick swap into a repair job. If the existing installation tests cleanly, the final cost stays lower.
Explora Ultra: the larger upfront spend
The Explora Ultra is aimed at viewers who want recording, a richer Catch Up experience and connected apps on one device. New units generally fall between R2,499 and R3,499 before installation. Retail promotions may include accessories or reduce the decoder price, while installer packages can combine the hardware and labour. An Ultra also needs the correct signal setup and internet for its connected functions. During load-shedding, the decoder, TV and router all need backup power if you want streaming apps to keep working. A small UPS for the router alone will not help if the television and decoder are off.

Where South Africans normally buy decoders
PEP, Game and Makro are the familiar national names, although availability changes by branch and online stock status. Builders-style hardware retailers, electronics shops and independent satellite dealers also carry selected models. DStv service centres and accredited installers can be more useful when you need the decoder supplied, registered and installed as one job.
- Large retailers: easy price comparison, till slips and standard returns, but installation may be a separate voucher or contractor booking.

Before paying, ask for the model number and a written list of the bundle contents. “Includes installation” may cover a straightforward single-view installation only, with extra cable, difficult roof access, wall chasing or a replacement dish charged separately. Installation is normally extra
A standard installation commonly adds roughly R650 to R1,200 when no promotional voucher applies. More involved work can run higher. Long cable routes, a double-storey roof, a new dish, an upgraded smart LNB, concealed cable or XtraView all add materials and time. Decoder replacement on a healthy existing system can be cheaper because the dish and cable remain in place. A technician should still check signal strength and quality. Picture breakup in rain is often an alignment, connector or cable problem; replacing the decoder without testing the line can leave the original fault untouched.

Should you buy a second-hand decoder?
A used decoder can look attractive at R300 or R500, but there are several checks to make first. Get the decoder number and smartcard details, then confirm with DStv that the unit is not linked to debt, reported stolen, insurance-blocked or tied to an account that cannot be transferred. Do this before handing over money.
Older models may no longer support current services or may need a different LNB and cabling arrangement. A private sale also gives you less protection if the hard drive fails shortly after purchase. On an Explora, test recording, HDMI output, the remote, network connection and both tuners where applicable.
A second-hand box makes most sense when its ownership is clean, the model is still supported and an installer has confirmed it suits your existing setup. Otherwise, the saving can disappear in call-out charges.
A practical 2026 budget
For a simple new HD installation, set aside roughly R1,400 to R2,200 all-in unless a bundle reduces the cost. For an Explora Ultra system, a realistic starting budget is closer to R3,300 to R5,000, with the upper end covering more materials or difficult access. Ask for an itemised quote so decoder, hardware, labour and any activation work are clear.
Prices change, but the buying rule stays the same: compare a working installation with another working installation. Comparing a loose decoder at one shop with a supplied-and-installed quote from a technician gives a misleading result.
