Extra View: also called XtraView, is DSTV’s answer to the multi-TV household. We install it weekly across Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and the Winelands for families who want one DSTV subscription but multiple TVs each tuned to a different channel.
The core idea
You have one primary decoder: usually the Explora or Explora Ultra in the main lounge, linked with one or two secondary decoders in other rooms. All three share a single MultiChoice subscription and smartcard, but each tunes to a different channel independently. So dad watches the rugby in the lounge, the kids watch cartoons in the bedroom, and gran watches her series in the cottage: all at the same time. How the cabling works
For the decoders to stay linked under one subscription, they need a “heartbeat” communication path between them. There are two ways to achieve this:
1. Single-cable solution with Smart LNB: A Smart LNB on the dish feeds satellite signals on one cable that splits intelligently to multiple decoders. This is the cleaner install for new homes and we use it whenever the dish and cabling allow.
2. Separate RF cable between decoders: An additional thin RF cable runs from the primary to each secondary decoder, carrying the heartbeat. This works on existing dishes that aren’t Smart LNB-equipped, or when running a new cable through walls isn’t practical.

Two-decoder vs three-decoder setups
Two-decoder Extra View works with all current Explora and HD decoders. Three-decoder Extra View requires an Explora Ultra as the primary, and can link to two HD or Explora secondaries. What it costs you
Hardware is the cost of the additional decoders. MultiChoice charges a small per-decoder subscription add-on (typically R109/month per secondary at the time of writing) on top of your normal package. There’s no extra channel cost: you’re effectively paying for the right to view the same subscription on more screens simultaneously.
Common Extra View issues we fix
The most frequent problem we’re called out for is one secondary decoder losing signal or showing the same channel as the primary. This usually means the heartbeat is failing because the linking cable came loose, a transformer is interfering with the RF signal, or the smartcards have de-paired with MultiChoice and need to be re-linked. When Extra View isn’t the right answer
If you’re running an apartment block, sectional title complex, lodge or wine farm with many TVs across many units, Extra View isn’t the right tool: you want communal DSTV with DStv Switches for body corporate setups, or commercial DSTV for guesthouses and hospitality venues.
