A DStv reconnection is one of those jobs that sounds bigger than it is. Most of the time it's an account matter, and the dish on your Franschhoek cottage or guest farm doesn't need touching at all. Here are the questions valley homeowners ask us most, with straight answers.
Quick answer: DStv reconnection happens automatically once the full amount owing, including any reconnection fee, shows on your DStv account. Leave the decoder switched on and tuned to a DStv channel while it waits for the signal. If channels don't come back, re-authorise the decoder in the MyDStv app. A blank screen with a signal error points to the dish or cable instead.
Your decoder only shows channels while DStv keeps sending it an active signal. When an account falls behind, that signal stops and the box shows an error instead of your programme. Reconnection is simply DStv switching it back on.
Nothing changes at the house. The dish, the LNB, the cable and the decoder all stay put. That's why most people in Franschhoek can sort it from their phone without a visit.
There are exceptions, and we cover them below. If you've just moved into the valley, our DStv relocation and reinstallation service explains what a move usually involves on top of the account side.
DStv's help pages explain that the fee covers the extra admin of processing late payments. They don't publish one fixed amount there, so we won't guess a figure. Your MyDStv app or your statement shows exactly what applies to you.
What matters more is paying the whole balance. DStv says services come back once the payment shows, provided the full amount has been paid, fee included. You can read that wording on DStv's reconnection help page.
| What you might pay | Who it goes to | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Arrears on your package | DStv | Whenever the account fell behind |
| Any reconnection fee DStv adds | DStv | After a late payment, as shown on your account |
| Access Fee, R125 a month at the time of writing | DStv | Explora, Explora Ultra or XtraView setups |
| Call-out and signal check | Your installer | Only if the dish, LNB or cable has a fault |
Our own repair and installation work is always quoted first. Ask our team for a current quote before anyone drives out to your farm or cottage.
It depends on how quickly the payment lands. DStv switches services back on automatically once the money reflects, and some payment methods clear faster than others.
Technician tip: Keep the decoder switched on and sitting on a DStv channel while you wait. A box that's off at the wall can't receive the switch-on signal. That's the most common reason we hear "I paid but nothing happened".
If the payment shows but the channels still aren't back, send the signal again yourself. The MyDStv app and DStv's WhatsApp self-service can both do this. Our guide to activating a DStv decoder walks through each method.

Read the message on the screen first. It tells you whether the trouble is the account or the signal, and those two need very different fixes.
E16 means the channel isn't authorised on that decoder yet. Check the account is fully paid, then re-authorise from the app. Our page on clearing DStv error E16 has the full routine.
E48-32 means no signal is reaching the decoder at all. Paying again won't help. Something between the dish and the box needs attention, like a loose connector, a shifted dish or a damaged cable.
In the valley, heavy winter rain and low cloud cause short drop-outs too, which show as E30-2. If it clears when the weather does, the dish is probably fine. If it lingers on dry days, book DStv signal repairs.
Switch off at the wall and slide the smartcard out. Wipe the chip gently with a dry cloth, put it back the right way round and power up again.
Often, yes. Plenty of homes in the village and out towards La Motte stand empty for months. A decoder that's been unplugged all that time can miss software updates as well as the account signal.
Our notes on using a decoder at a holiday home cover the account side of owning two properties.
The mountains matter here as well. A dish that only just clears a ridge has very little margin, so winter cloud and rain knock it out sooner than a dish with a clear view of the northern sky.
Guest farms near Wemmershoek and boutique stays in town often run several decoders. If they're linked in XtraView, each box needs the account active before it shows channels, and linked decoders must be able to check in with each other.
Reconnect the main account first, then switch every decoder on. If a linked box shows a heartbeat or linking error, our XtraView setup service can pair them again. Bigger properties with a distribution system are better handled through commercial DStv installation.
Think about the cable runs too. A long run down a farm driveway in Simondium has joints where water can creep in, and months of no use can hide a corroded connector until the day you need it.
Safety first: Don't climb onto the roof to check the dish, and never open the decoder. Wet tiles and ladders don't mix, especially after winter rain in the valley. Leave anything above head height to a technician.
If the checks above don't fix it, call a technician. You can reach our team on 079 754 5527, and we'll give you a price before we drive out.
Most reconnections are sorted in the app, but the ones that aren't usually need a proper signal test. Our DStv installation in Franschhoek team covers the village, Groendal, La Provence and the farms beyond. Book a signal check and we'll confirm a time, often the same or next day, depending on the schedule.

Usually, yes. Once the full amount shows on your account, DStv switches services back on automatically. If channels don't return, use the MyDStv app or DStv's WhatsApp self-service to re-send the signal while the decoder is switched on.
Your MyDStv app and your DStv statement show the amount owing, including any reconnection fee. DStv's help pages explain the fee covers the admin of late payments but don't list one figure, so check your own account before you pay.
Once the payment reflects on your DStv account, reconnection is automatic. How quickly that happens depends on the payment method you used. Keep the decoder on a DStv channel so it can receive the signal as soon as it's sent.
Only if the problem is the signal rather than the account. If you see E48-32 or a no-signal message after paying, the dish, LNB or cable needs checking. Homes on farms and slopes around Franschhoek also benefit from a signal test after a long break.
Recordings sit on the Explora's hard drive, so a suspended account doesn't wipe them by itself. You may need an active subscription to play them back. If the drive shows errors after months unplugged, that's a separate fault worth having checked.
