Moving house is stressful enough without arriving to a dead TV on the first night. DSTV doesn’t simply travel with you — the dish has to come down, go up at the new place and be realigned to the satellite from the new position. This checklist covers how a relocation actually works, what it costs, and how to avoid the classic mistakes that leave people without signal for a week.
Relocation is not a new install — and that saves you money
If your decoder and dish already work, you don’t need to buy everything again. A DSTV relocation and re-install carries your existing hardware to the new property, so you’re mainly paying for the labour to remount and realign — usually less than a full new installation. Booking the right job is the first way to keep the cost down; we cover the numbers in our installation cost guide.
Don’t rip the old dish down yourself
It’s tempting to save a bit by taking the dish down before the move. Resist it. A dish that’s been unbolted and thrown in a bakkie usually arrives bent, with damaged connectors, and its alignment reference gone — which means more work, not less, at the other end. Leave it to be removed cleanly, or simply leave it for the new owners and have a dish supplied at the new place. Either way, the realignment is the skilled part.
The relocation checklist
- Book ahead. Moving season and month-ends get busy — give a few days’ notice so you’re not without TV on arrival.
- Check line-of-sight at the new place. The new dish position needs a clear view to the satellite, away from trees and gutter overflow. We assess this on site.
- Know your TV points. Decide up front which rooms need a point — running cable during the re-install is far cheaper than opening walls later.
- Keep your smartcard and decoder together. Your subscription follows the card, not the house.
- Confirm your package still suits the new home. More rooms might mean you want Extra View — worth deciding before the visit.
