DStv Family Channels List (2026): Every Channel + Price

Yes, DStv Family still exists in 2026

We get asked this more than you’d think, usually by someone whose parents or in-laws have had the same package for a decade and want to know if it’s about to vanish. It hasn’t. DStv Family is still a live bouquet in 2026, sitting between Access and Compact, and MultiChoice hasn’t given any signal it’s being retired or folded into another tier. What has changed, and what genuinely confuses people, is that a handful of individual channels are being renamed or shut down this month and next: that’s a channel-level shuffle, not the package disappearing. We’ll get into exactly which ones below.

What kind of household Family actually fits

Family is built for exactly what the name suggests: telenovelas, local drama, kids’ programming, lifestyle and documentary channels, with a lighter sport offering than Compact. If nobody in the house is glued to SuperSport on a Saturday and the TV is mostly on for Mzansi Magic-style drama, Afrikaans entertainment, cooking shows or the kids after school, Family covers that ground without you paying for football coverage that never gets watched. It’s a package we set up a lot for retired couples and households where the sport-watching member of the family has moved out or streams matches separately.

DStv Family price in 2026

DStv Stream Family: the app-only streaming version, is priced at R299 a month. On a satellite decoder, the subscription runs a bit higher, generally somewhere in the R330 to R350 range depending on the current offer, since decoder subscriptions carry the broadcast infrastructure cost that streaming doesn’t. That figure moves around more than the streaming price, so confirm the exact number in MyDStv or with your installer before you commit to it. For the full comparison against Access, Compact and the sport-heavy tiers, our DStv packages and price list page is kept current.

The channel changes hitting Family this month

Two of the four channels MultiChoice is closing on 16 September 2026 sit in the Family line-up: Mzansi Bioskop and Mzansi Music both go dark at 23:59 that night, alongside M-Net Movies 1 and kykNET Lekker on other tiers. MultiChoice’s explanation is that it’s consolidating overlapping channels rather than cutting content outright, so whatever you watched on Bioskop or Mzansi Music should resurface elsewhere on the Family line-up, but the channel numbers themselves stop broadcasting. Earlier, from 19 August 2026, SuperSport Variety 4: Family’s one general sport channel, is renamed SuperSport Action as part of a wider SuperSport rebrand across all packages. Same channel, same programming, new name on the guide.

Family, Access or Compact: which one actually fits?

If sport is a genuine weekly habit in your house, Family will frustrate you fast: it carries only a slice of what Compact offers on SuperSport, and our DStv Compact channels list lays out what you’d be adding by stepping up. If the household barely watches sport at all and the budget matters more than the drama selection, it’s worth checking whether DStv Access covers enough at a noticeably lower price, since Family and Access overlap more than most people expect on kids’ and lifestyle channels. Family earns its spot in the middle mainly through kykNET & Kie, the fuller Africa Magic spread and a couple of extra movie channels that Access doesn’t carry.

Why Family sits at an odd price point

A fair number of people look at Family next to Access and wonder why the gap is so wide for what looks like a similar channel count on paper. The honest answer is that Family’s extra spend buys you specific channels rather than a proportionally bigger bundle: kykNET & Kie for Afrikaans viewers, the full Africa Magic Epic and Family pairing instead of just Epic, an extra movie channel or two, and a slightly better sport slice with LaLiga and Football Africa alongside the general Variety channel. If none of those specific channels matter to your household, Access will feel like better value. If even one of them is a must-watch, Family closes that gap quickly.

Setting Family up right the first time

Package choice only matters if the installation behind it is solid. We fit a lot of Family decoders for households replacing an ageing dish or moving a decoder into a new lounge layout, and the same rules apply regardless of bouquet: correct dish alignment, cabling that isn’t going to fail after the next Cape storm, and a decoder that’s properly activated and tuned before we pack up. Our DStv decoder setup service covers exactly this, whether you’re activating Family for the first time or swapping in a new decoder on an existing dish.
