The Winelands has dozens of people offering DSTV installation — from established teams to one-man-band weekend operators with a borrowed ladder. The difference between a clean install and one you’ll be calling someone back to fix in six months is usually obvious if you know what to look for. Here are the seven things we’d check before booking anyone, including us.
1. Do they use a calibrated signal meter?
This is the single biggest tell. A professional installer aligns the dish using a calibrated satellite meter that reads true signal strength in dB and signal quality as a percentage. An amateur looks at the decoder’s signal bar on the TV and adjusts until “it looks ok”. The decoder bar is a rough approximation — a calibrated meter shows you a 5% difference between “works now” and “works in 5 years”.
2. Galvanised brackets, not bent steel
Cheap installers use mild steel brackets that rust within 18 months in the Winelands climate. Galvanised brackets cost a little more but hold for a decade. Ask before booking — a good installer will be proud to tell you.
3. RG6 cable with proper weatherproofing
RG6 is the minimum cable spec for satellite. Cheap RG59 is sometimes used to save R30, and you’ll lose signal within two years. F-connectors must be sealed with self-amalgamating tape at the dish end — the most common reason we get called for repairs is a connector that wasn’t sealed and is now full of water.
4. Do they mount the dish in a sensible place?
A good installer walks the property first and picks a dish position with clear line-of-sight to the satellite, away from trees that will grow into the path, away from gutter overflow, and accessible for future maintenance. A bad installer mounts it wherever the ladder reached.
5. Do they understand Explora vs HD vs Extra View?
If you ask about Explora installation, Extra View setup or a Smart LNB and they vague-answer their way through, walk away. A real DSTV installer can explain each in one sentence and tell you exactly what hardware your setup needs.
6. Same-day for urgent repairs
The whole point of having a local installer is that they can come out fast when the signal drops before a big match or wedding. Ask if they offer same-day signal repair callouts. If they take three working days for an urgent issue, you’ll get burned eventually.
7. Honest pricing with no surprises
A proper installer quotes up front based on the property, decoder type, cabling and TV points. The price should match what you pay at the end. If they undercut a written quote on the day, that’s usually corner-cutting. If they jack the price up on the day, that’s extortion. Both are signs to find someone else.
